Self-building is a complicated process, so avoid these dangers and make your project a success
Don’t be
Inflexible – nothing in the building process is rigid. You are likely to face obstacles during the project, but if you’re open minded solutions will be easier to achieve.
Disorganized – lack of coordination will result in mistakes being made that will leave you out of pocket and waste time.
Stubborn – nobody knows everything about designing and building, so remember that first hand experience is invaluable.
Frivolous – work out your budget and try to stick to it as closely as possible and be conscious of the fact that your finances aren’t infinite.
Impractical – if you have a family it’s wise to arrange temporary accommodation if the house isn’t habitable. Living on site can seriously disrupt family life and slow up the build.
Unrealistic – although this is a great opportunity to realise your dream home, remember you are building in reality.
Naïve – write clear briefs for your contractors and draw up contracts to avoid exploitation.
