The bathroom in Louise and Jeremy Brown’s period farmhouse works hard, but looks stunning

This bathroom is needed for both rushed morning showers and long, relaxing baths. The couple have retained the old beams and weathered timber flooring, but the rest of the room is furnished with chic, contemporary fixtures that provide the cutting-edge performance needed in a modern bathroom.

The Brief

‘We wanted a modern, luxurious bathroom, based on ideas we’d got from staying in nice hotels,’ says Jeremy. There’s a walk-in shower concealed behind a frosted glass pane, a modern take on a traditional roll-top bath, an integrated audio system so you can play your favourite music and six different lighting themes to select from.

The Best BIt

‘The walk-in shower,’ says Jeremy. ‘We lucked out with the placing of the beam – it was in just the right position to fit the shower behind it. Everyone comments on how well it works.’

With hindsight

‘We compromised on practicality for clean lines,’ Jeremy says. ‘We didn’t want taps on the bath, so it fills through the overflow, controlled by taps on the wall. It looks good, but you can’t top up the hot water when you’re in the bath!’

Top Tip

‘Our walk-in shower initially met with scepticism but is such a success – push for what you want.’

PROS & CONS

PROS

  • The high-end sanitaryware from Kohler feels luxurious.
  • The large window allows plenty of light into the room creating a tranquil atmosphere.
  • Modern fittings in a period setting give the best of both worlds.

CONS

  • Tiling old, uneven walls can be a headache for your subcontractor.
  • Fitting a bath which fills through the overflow will mean installing extra pipes in the ceiling – no small job.
