Most are constructed predominantly off-site and can be erected in just a couple of weeks. Meanwhile Devon-based architect Gale & Snowden has developed its own ecological kit-house. It is building the first prototypes of the timber-framed houses and plan to offer them as a package. The frame is in oak with recycled newspaper insulation, solar panels, natural ventilation and sustainably sourced, non toxic materials. Heating costs could be as low as £80 per year. Kit houses are mainly in timber-frame, although there have been recent innovations in steel-frame, taking advantage of the material’s comparative lightness over timber. Contemporary models are impressive, and it’s a truly international scene.
