Warranties aren't a legal requirement, but they're strongly recommended for any self-builder or home improver

What is a warranty?

It’s a form of guarantee on the structural integrity of a building that meets claims by subsequent owners about faults in the building.

At what point should I get one?

After your architect has drawn plans you should contact a warranty provider.

Do I have to have one?

No, but if you want to sell your property in the future the buyer’s lender will require one, and if you need finance your own lender will also need one.

How long does it last?

Warranties usually cover a period of 10 years.

How much will it cost?

Expect to pay up to one and a half per cent of your total build cost.
